Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
