The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
