An defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This wider security environment underscores the importance of strong measures and caution in every aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
