A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.
Trial details and international connections
The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.
Regional context and group hierarchy
The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
